Boundaries Between Copyright, Creative Expression, and Social Media

There are many legal and ethical issues concerning rights and protection of digital media in today’s society with the widespread use of social media sites. It seems like users of social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, are presented with new issues on a daily basis due to the constant development of technology. New modes for sharing personal information, photography, and music, as well as ways to retrieve and modify such digital media, present some issues that have yet to be solved. The ways in which people can use the internet and the associated technologies are endless. Internet users can share personal information, pictures, artwork, opinions, blogs, written expression, and the list goes on. Laws protecting these various types of works, especially copyrighted works, have been directly impacted by the growth and accessibility of digital media. Advances in technology have made laws, such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA), ineffective in its ability to protect the work and its creator (Packard, 2012). At face value, digital media sharing is not a negative thing, and many would argue that it leads to further creativity, innovation, and expression. There are, however, real concerns over copyright protection, property rights, and privacy protection that revolve around digital media that cannot be ignored.
